Test Details & What It Measures
A Total Cholesterol test measures the overall amount of cholesterol in your blood. Cholesterol is a waxy substance that your body needs to build cells and produce certain hormones, but too much can lead to plaque buildup in the arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. This test includes the combined levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, and 20% of your triglyceride value. It is typically included in a lipid panel, a standard test used in routine health screenings.
Normal total cholesterol levels are less than 200 mg/dL. A reading between 200 and 239 mg/dL is considered borderline high, and 240 mg/dL or higher is considered high, which may warrant further evaluation and lifestyle or medical intervention. This test helps monitor your heart health and guides decisions on diet, exercise, and medications if necessary.
