Test Details & What It Measures
A serum selenium test measures the amount of selenium in your blood—a trace mineral that plays a vital role in thyroid function, immune health, and antioxidant defense. Selenium helps protect cells from damage and supports enzymes that regulate metabolism. This test is often ordered if there’s concern about selenium deficiency or toxicity, which can occur due to poor diet, certain gastrointestinal disorders, or excessive supplementation.
Normal serum selenium levels typically range from 70 to 150 µg/L, depending on the lab and population. Low levels may be linked to weakened immunity, thyroid dysfunction, or heart muscle problems, while high levels can lead to symptoms like hair loss, brittle nails, and gastrointestinal upset. The test helps your provider determine whether supplementation is needed or if current levels are affecting your health.
