Test Details & What It Measures
A Prolactin test measures the level of prolactin, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. Prolactin plays a key role in breast development and in stimulating milk production after childbirth. Although it is most commonly associated with women, prolactin is also present in men and helps regulate functions like testosterone production and reproductive health. This test is often used to investigate irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, unexpected breast milk production, or symptoms of pituitary disorders, such as headaches or vision problems.
Normal prolactin levels vary by sex and physiological state. In non-pregnant women, normal levels are typically between 4.8 to 23.3 ng/mL. During pregnancy, prolactin levels can rise significantly, sometimes exceeding 200 ng/mL. In men, normal levels usually fall between 4.0 to 15.2 ng/mL. Elevated prolactin levels, a condition known as hyperprolactinemia, may be caused by pituitary tumors (prolactinomas), hypothyroidism, certain medications, or stress. Low levels are rare but may indicate dysfunction of the pituitary gland.
