Test Details & What It Measures
An HDL Cholesterol test measures the level of high-density lipoprotein in your blood, commonly referred to as “good cholesterol.” HDL helps protect your heart by removing excess cholesterol from your bloodstream and transporting it to the liver, where it’s processed and eliminated. Higher levels of HDL are associated with a lower risk of heart disease and stroke, making it an important part of your overall cholesterol profile.
For adults, an HDL level of 60 mg/dL or higher is considered protective against heart disease. Levels between 40–59 mg/dL are acceptable, but below 40 mg/dL is considered a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, particularly in men. Women typically have higher HDL levels than men, which may contribute to their lower heart disease risk before menopause. Maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding tobacco use can help raise HDL levels.
