Test Details & What It Measures
A Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) test measures the level of FSH in your blood. FSH is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that plays a crucial role in the reproductive system of both men and women. In women, FSH helps control the menstrual cycle and stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles, which contain the eggs. In men, FSH supports the production of sperm by acting on the testes. This test is often used to evaluate fertility problems, irregular menstrual cycles, menopause, or delayed or early puberty.
FSH levels vary depending on age, sex, and phase of the menstrual cycle. In premenopausal women, levels typically range from 4.7 to 21.5 mIU/mL, with higher levels seen around ovulation. After menopause, levels rise significantly and may exceed 25.8 to 134.8 mIU/mL due to reduced estrogen feedback. In men, normal FSH levels are generally between 1.5 and 12.4 mIU/mL. Abnormal FSH levels can indicate ovarian or testicular dysfunction, pituitary disorders, or hormonal imbalances affecting fertility.
